I had to take a part a compression stop valve. The old ferrule did not come off easily. So I cut off the damaged end and used the same valve, however, I used a different ferrule from another valve I had on hand.
The new ferrule came with another brasscraft stop valve for a 1/2" pipe. However, the valve was a different configuration/style then the old valve. I think they looked the same but it was hard to tell for sure since the old ferrule was deformed.
So my question(s)....
are the 1/2" ferrules used on these valves the same regardless of style of valve?
also does it matter which direction/orientation you slide these ferrules onto the pipe?

Those brass ferrules are universal and the same on either end.

You type faster or read it faster.

The only incompatibility would be if one valve had a coarse thread and the other a fine thread. The ferrules are generic.
