 backflow preventer dripping
Author: coolc7116 (TX)

I have a fire sprinkler system in my home and I recently noticed a slight drip coming from the backflow preventer. A sprinkler company came out to take a look and recommended replacing it. Is the drip something I really need to be worried about?

Most back flows can be rebuilt for much less. I would check with another company to see if it can be rebuilt.

A fire system backflow preventer does NOT usually have a "vent". It is usually a check valve with a pressure relief valve adjacent to it. But in any case, unless it is a REALLY big one it should not cost anywhere near that much to replace it and repairing would be even less expensive.

Is a little bit of a drip that big of a deal? There's a floor drain, so it's not damaging any wood, sheetrock or anything. Is it only a nuisance or could it lead to bigger problems down the road?

Ever see that Allstate commercial....with the guys sitting on the couch? No one can say it won't get worse, but according to Mr. Murphy, it will probably get worse when you're not home.

How about a picture of it so we can see what you are working with?
