 HELP! Bathroom reeks of urine!
Author: mayari (AR)

Hi, I am hoping someone can help us. My husband replaced our toilet with a new water efficient one. A couple of days after doing so we started noticing a urine smell. He checked and replaced the wax ring as well as caulked between the toilet and the floor. It actually seems as though it's coming from the shower drain. He has put bleach, baking soda, every kind of bathroom cleaner you can imagine in the shower drain and nothing helps! We did not have this problem until after the new toilet was put in. He just put vinegar down the drain and for now it smells good but I'm worried it's just a temporary fix. Please, any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!

Look down into the shower drain with a flashlight. You should be able to see standing water in the trap, if there is a trap.

I don't think anything fell in but it's a possibility. The toilet seems fine, flushes fine, etc.

if the shower is in close proximity to the toilet, they may share the same line. if the new toilet has a stronger flush than the old one it may be pulling some water from your shower trap each time it is flushed. after a few flushes the shower trap may loose enough water to allow sewer gases thru. the same could be happening with the lav (sink) also. make sure to run some water in the sink and shower each day to ensure the traps keep their seal.
