Hi all. Did search for shower drain and only 16 posts came up. None of them were close. Here is my question. Remodeling shower stall. Currently tiled with a 3" drop from main bathroom floor into shower. We are on concrete slab.

My wife has MS and cannot negotiate that step (seems minimal but is hard for her). I want to raise the shower basin after I pull the tile up, so that when I re-tile, there is not step. We are going to do a new shower door system with a sweep on it to keep water in, so that we walk straight into the shower (saw this at a hotel in vegas and worked great for her).

I know that I can clean up the basin and get down to slab, then raise up with finish concrete with an appropriate slope down to drain. I will also be finishing shower with waterproofing membrane on cement board when all is said and done.

First question is, how do I raise the drain pipe itself to put a new drain in? Obviously when I raise the concrete shower floor up to meet the existing concrete bathroom floor so they are flush with each other, I will have to also raise the drain .... just not sure how to do it.

Additionally, will I need to put any layer of thinset or mortar on top of the concrete before I do the membrane or can I apply that right on top of the concrete? Currently there is a 1" mortar on top of concrete.

Just to throw an idea your way.. perhaps add a teak shower floor?
