My area water supplier changed from well to a different source which we were told would likely have the advantage of softer water. In an effort to cut down on monthly expenses since retirement I was wondering if it would be OK to discontinue my whole house water service (they bring the salt & add to the unit outside). Questions: other than calling to cancel the service, how would I turn off the unit? Would that mess up anything in my plumbing? How long would it take for me to notice a difference? If I ( or next house owners) wanted to turn it back on, could it just be started up again without too much hassle? I feel like I could not trust the answers of the company, since they're interest is in selling. Thanks for any advice.

The easiest way would be to regenerate the softener, the put the valve in "bypass" mode and unplug it. Then, to reactivate it, you would just have to turn the valve back to "service" position, plug it in and reset the timer.

Take a sample of your new waters and have it tested for softness and floating debris. Based on the results, as suggested, you can place your softener is "BY-PASS" mode. If you have an electric timer, you may have to reset it once you have plugged in the cord.
What brand of softener do you have...?
Best Wishes
