My condo has had recurrences of hot and cold water pipes freezing. It's on the 3rd floor, there is a hot water recirc loop on the first floor only that runs the length of the building. I am wondering if I could have a Grundfos comfort series circulator and comfort valve installed in addition to the system now so it would help keep the pipes from freezing seeing it returns warm water via the cold water supply to the hot water heater. It seems like the easiest way to fix the freeze ups without running more return pipes. does this make sense? I also saw the Hot Water Lobster online but I'm skeptical about that one.
thx
Mike

that depends on your having a dedicated cold water feed from the basement.
you definately have a seperate hot water pipe from your own water heater but there is one cold main coming up from the basement with branches for you and other condo's, it may not work.

It would probably work, but make sure it doesn't violate any terms of use with the building's water supply.

Do you have any thoughts on the "hot water lobster" device?

In that case the "retro fit" circulation system would have push the water into your cold water system, out of the house into either the city system through a water meter, or the complexes water distribution system, to the heater's room then through that piping to the water heater. A very long and complicated route.
