 Kitchen Sink Basket Strainer Gasket
Author: george 7941 (Canada)

The instructions want the gasket installed underneath the sink flange and the actual seal is with putty or silicone applied to the top of the sink flange.

I have encountered many leaks with these strainers with putty/silicone used. I install the (thin) rubber gasket on top, between the strainer flange and the sink flange and use no putty/silicone. Since the gasket is thin it does not make the strainer flange sit excessively high. I keep spare thin gaskets in case a thick gasket is supplied with the basket strainer. So far I have not encountered leaks on the strainers I have installed.

How do you install these strainers?

As per manufacturer's instructions.

When done properly, no leaks.

Not like that. I use putty on top and the gasket on the bottom. Usually, when the strainer leaks, it is because you allowed putty to go UNDER the sink and it gets into the locknut's thread and prevents proper tightening.

I toss the wafer thin gasket and apply silicone under the flange. Zero call-backs.

The consensus seems to be to apply sealant to the sink flange. I will use silicone on my next few strainer installations and keep the gasket underneath the sink flange.
