Any recommendations on whole house filter and softener?
Author: kumba (FL)

Looking at getting a whole house water filter and softener for my house. I would need around 30000 grains for my given municipal water quality and usage. Shouldn't need more then 10gpm for the house.

Has anyone used those Aquasana filters and softeners? Do they actually hold up for years or are they problematic?

Any other recommendations? Are the salt free softeners any good?

Not too worried about UV lamps or reverse osmosis just want reasonably good water quality. It's all going outside in my 3'x3' shed with the water heater during a re-pipe. It will be out of the elements and a GFCI will be available.

Have you had your water tested? What were the actual results? What are your neighbors using to process their waters? Filters, will not soften water. Filters only remove debris.

Best Wishes

Have not had the water at my house tested specifically but the county publishes water quality info. They list the pH as 7.8, hardness between 10-15 gpg, and iron less the 0.1 mg/l. I was using this info when I came up with that 30K grain softener capacity based upon my average monthly water usage. I'll look for somewhere to test my tap water but am still looking for a good filter and softener setup.

I don't think any of my neighbors are using anything for filtration of softening. I'm going down this road because the person I live with has sensitive skin and is prone to exzema. Filtering and then softening the water should help them greatly with it. Most of the people I know who do have softeners just put them in bypass cause they didn't want to mess with the salt.

As best as I understand it, I would want 3 stages for my home:
1) Sediment and Turbidity Filter
2) 1 Micron purification filter
3) Water Softener
