 sink drain flange keeps leaking
Author: gldillon83 (VA)

Bought a new bathroom vanity sink. I am having an issue on the new sink drain pop up type flange leaking when the water is running. I have used plumbers putty on 4 different attempts. The rubber gasket and anti friction washer are brand new.The sink bowl is made out of composite resin. Question is: Should I use 100 % silicon adhesive instead of plumbers putty to set the drain plug in this time around? This will be my 5th attempt. I am also thinking of applying pipe dope to the threads as well. Please help with any advice.

Thanks so much,

-Greg

If it leaks around the flange the water will just go down the drain, there won't be any visible leakage. Plumbers putty is what I use there, don't turn the flange, keep it steady and turn the pop-up assembly.
If there's visible leakage then it's around the large rubber washer underneath the sink. A little dab of silicon on the threads of the pop up assembly before installation will keep it from leaking.

IT will also keep it from ever coming out without a saw. Pipe dope on the threads under the tapered gasket, and did you apply pipe dope to the tailpiece if it is a brass one threaded into the drain?

And I have been using putty since Hector's dad was a pup and haven't had any issues.

"a chacun son gout" = to each his own.
I had to google it.

Ok.....I have success! After using plumbers putty on four unsuccessful tries, I used 100% clear silicon for the flange and gooey pipe dope on the threads. NO LEAKS! Problem solved. I truly believe that the issue was the sink bowl that was made of a composite resin, which did not work well for plumbers putty to adhere itself to that type of material.

Thanks to all for the advice!!!!
