 Gas valve and sediment traps
Author: Shanon (NV)

I was told by our a/c heater technician that our "gas valve wore out due to not having a sediment trap." Is this so.? The a/c unit is 20 years old and has never had a sediment trap because
there was no code to have one prior to 2008. He said we needed a sediment trap. Do we.?

You probably need a different, or better, AC technician. Gas valves do NOT "wear out", from sediment.

The old style gas valve common in the early 1980's square shape were prone to leaking. Sediment traps are require in Ca plumbing codes where the appliance in not viewed, For example on a furnace or water heater Yes but not on a cook top or decorative fireplace because if there is a flame issue with sediment affecting the flame it will be noticed but not on a furnace. And the gas has to change direction in order to work. Don't install a tee and have the led downward at the T and have the gas travel across the left right inlet outlets as it will do nothing to trap sediment.

Adding a sediment trap should be a non-issue. If the tech is using that as a reason to justify a ridiculous price, get another quote.
