Cast iron closet flange/cut subfloor dilemma etc.
Author: billypowers (CA)

Hi all,

Total novice and first time posting. I've tried to research this myself and thought I'd ask and try to get an answer to my specific concerns.

My cut around the closet flange is very subpar. Considering the finished floor with underlayment will make the closet flange flush with the finished floor or very close (1/16), is it workable to have the hole in the subfloor around the closet flange be about an inch (in some places) too big? I really don't want to tear out and recut the whole piece if it is not necessary.

The closet flange is CI and not fastened to the subfloor, in fact there are no screw holes for doing so and it was not attached to the old subfloor.

My concern is getting a good seal with the wax ring and possibly shoring up the bad cut with patching compound or something similar. Is this a bad way to approach the problem?

Thanks in advance,

the back of the flange should rest on top of the FINISHED floor

do, or have someone else do, whatever it takes

cast iron flanges are not fastened to the floor.
a 1 inch space around the flange will be close but i think it will cover with the toilet.
you can get a closet flange extension kit to raise the top of the flange 1/4 inch.

"...My cut around the closet flange is very subpar..."

That is where your problem begins. To properly replace floor (sub and finish) under a toilet, the flange must first come off. The subfloor and finish floor are then fitted to within 1/2"-3/4" from the drain. A new flange is installed last.
