 Repaired 4 in stack
Author: fredcapo (NJ)

Hello. I found a laterally cracked 4 in cast iron elbow off of a 2nd floor toilet, on the main stack. I repaired the crack w 2 part jb weld epoxy and it no longer leaks. Looks solid. Is this a permanent fix? Thanjs

No. More than likely it will have to be replaced in the next few years

To quote Dirty Harry, "Do you feel lucky?" More than likely the crack will just get bigger under the JB Weld.

the epoxy is a good product but the problem is the cast iron and the epoxy will expand and contract at different rates with temperature changes. this will take some time but will ultimately lead to a failure..
