 dishwasher freezing
Author: Homer (MD)

Where we live it generally doesn't get too much below freezing, but usually we get one cold snap or so a year where it gets down to between 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit. The last couple of cold snaps our dishwasher has stopped getting any water supply. The strange thing is the sink right next to the dishwasher never has any problems with water supply.

The first time the problem fixed itself when the weather warmed up. This time, I took the panel off the front bottom of the dishwasher and used a hairdryer for about 10 minutes or so to warm things up and the problem was fixed.

I don't recall having these problems before we redid our kitchen last year, which involved replacing the laminate floor with hardwood, replacing the cabinets, and replacing the dishwasher with a new Kitchenaid and moving it from the left side of the sink to the right side. The dishwasher is along an exterior wall (but it was before as well).

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for why this is now happening and (more importantly) if there's anything we can do to prevent it.

thanks

find out where the cold is coming into the dishwasher space and stop it from coming in.

Does the dishwasher sit in a drain pan ? I've seen where the drain from a pan allowed enough cold air in to freeze the water supply.
There could be some supply piping in an outside wall, sometimes that'll freeze.

Here's one idea, next time re-locate the dishwasher a little further away... like Florida!
Here in NC it's going below zero the next few nights brrr. I wouldn't mind seeing a few palm trees in the front yard right about now. smiling smiley
