Trying to change a 2" copper shower drain to a 2" plastic one with out using a fernco as it will not be accessable when the project is complete. Any ideas other than soldering a threaded fitting on the copper? Thanks

solder on a copper hub fitting and pour a lead joint.

What's your concern with a shielded coupling for the transition. No-hub cast iron(with shielded couplings) is used all the time and more times than not, it's either buried in the ground or buried in the framing.

You won't find many commercial multi floor structures that don't use shielded couplings and cast iron due to fire codes.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just have never been a fan of ferncos in an inaccessable place. I know they are used all the time in places. I have no problem using them where I could get back to them later if I ever needed to without tearing into walls or floors. Thanks to all who responded.

"Ferncos" are NOT approved for use in above ground locations or underground inside a building, so you aversion to them is proper. You need an "approved" transition coupling.

Fernco DOES make an "approved shielded band coupling", even though that is not what people usually mean when they use the term.
