 tub spout broke off
Author: Pete1954 (TX)

I have a tub spout shower diverter that was broken off. How can I tell if it is threads or tube. I suspect it is threaded 1/2" nipple soddered onto pipe. I am considering an easy out to screw out. Not sure if it is plastic or metal. Do not want to start a shower project unless I can reasonably project the cost or the need. This is a second bath so it is not critical yet. Appreaciate responces to my email. I have relocated. Not the same city or state

I would suggest using a flashlight to actually see what is going on.

you need to look at the bottom of the spout up close to the wall. if it is a slip on type there will be a small hole with a set screw inside. loosen the screw and trhe spout should twist and slide right off.
if there is no set screw then it is threaded onto a nipple or an adapter. if a minor application of trying to turn it does not unscrew it then it safest to destroy the spoutby cutting all around it and removing it in pieces.
easy job for someone who has done it many time but not a job for the faint of heart.

He said it "broke off" so the spout should have the remnant of the connection pipe, although I cannot imagine either copper or steel "breaking off", unless it is a threaded connection right at the wall that rusted off. A picture of the broken off spout and the pipe in the wall would be beneficial to make a diagnosis.

i took it to mean the diverter button had broken off but the rest of the spout was still intact...

It could be interpreted either way so we either need a better description or a picture.
