After removing the old caulk on my tub, there is a 1/2" gap between the wall and the tub. There is no lip on the tub, and a 6" gap behind the wall! A backer rod won't work as the gap is way too big! How do I caulk this?

What kind of tub do you have, that doesn't have a tile "flange" against the studs?

some people do buy a tub that is meant to be free standing but want it installed in an alcove.
i don't understand what the 6" gap has to do with caulking???

Any "good" installer would install the recommended "tile flange option" when using a drop in tub in an alcove. HE means he doesn't want to fill the whole 6" void in the wall with caulking.

It won't really matter how it's done if it isn't secured. It will move around with use and break the seal regardless.

If it is cast iron, it will not move around.

don't forget about "ballgate".
anyway, i'm about 30 miles north of boston and i (intentionally) have only been there to go a couple of red sox vs yankee games. i have no need nor desire to go thru the worlds largest car wash.. AKA the big dig. which will be paid for in 2036 AD..

Your local big box store should carry foam backer rod in 5/8 and 3/4. Made by Quickcrete and/or Frostex. Make sure the surfaces are squeaky clean. (Use Acetone, Lacquer thinner, etc.) Use masking tape on both surfaces and apply a thin skim of caulk to adhere the backer rod top and bottom, and allow to cure before doing the final "pretty" caulk layer. I like Polyseamseal, it's durable, flexible, and cleans up with water.
