 dishwasher overflow
Author: bonnasue (CA)

All of a sudden, when we run the dishwasher, water comes out of the overflow valve that sits on top of our kitchen sink. Although I can target some of the water into the sink by turning the opening to face the sink, most of the water spreads out all over the place on top of the sink and countertop. Any suggestion as to what needs to be done? THANK YOU for any help.

The water is coming out from the "Air Gap". There are two hoses that connect to the underside of the air gap. One hose is from the dishwasher and the other connects to the garbage disposal(if you have one) or to a drain tailpiece tee. There is a restriction in the hose from the air gap to the disposal/tee. Check the hose for a kink, but usually the hose or nipple at the disposal/tee is plugged up with gunk and needs to be cleaned.

I had to come behind a guy that replaced the disposal and didn't knock out the plug. The new hardwood cabinets and maple floors got damaged in the overflow when the air gap blew apart. I am glad I wasn't responsible for the damage. The homeowner was even more torqued off when it didn't take more than about 2 minutes to solve the problem that the first guy forgot.

THANK YOU Steve! My husband didn't see any kinks or other obstructions in the pipes/hoses. He think it's a clog. Any suggestions as to how to un-clog? A neighbor said to run the dishwasher twice with CLR. But that worries us. Do we need a plumber?

Did your husband remove the hose between the air gap and disposal/tee and check inside the nipple that the hose clamps onto? Most air gaps have a removable lid, that's accessible when the decorative cap is pulled off. The lid should also be removed to check the air gap for internal gunk. If water is coming out from the air gap, then the problem is the air gap, the hose between the air gap and the disposal/tee, the nipple the hose clamps onto or a restricted drain(not usually the drain). There's not much to it.
