I have a trip lever tub drain assembly type...you have to hold lever in for tub to drain..how do I fix this?

You replace the trip lever overflow plate. Preferably with a quality brass chrome plated one.

Remove the two screws, pull the mechanism up until it sticks out of the hole, remove the cotter pin, connect the new trip lever by replacing the cotter pin, then slide it back down and replace the two screws.

yes, but be careful.
as a novice last time I did it, as I pulled the lever out it also pulled the overflow tube loose from the tee below, by the time I saw what was happening, the overflow tube fell into the space behind the tub, and I stood in the tub cursing for an hour.

I said "pull it up until it sticks out of the opening, NOT pull it all the way out.
