The drain pipe from the relief valve blew out water everywhere. The waterr stoped. Someone told me it was either the t&p like im thinking but told me it might be the thermostate. If it wasnt the relief valve and i dont have high wtr psi wouldnt it be expansion?.

If it blew water everywhere, it was either due to the pressure being too high, or the temperature too high. Most times the thermostat reset button will pop out on a high temperature condition, preventing the T + P valve from releasing. You might installed a pressure gauge with a lazy hand to find out where your pressure spikes at. It could very well be from expansion.

IF it was expansion, it would only have discharged a cup or two of water. If it was pressure, it would have run until the city pressure dropped which could have been a long time. discharging because of temperature ONLY happens until the tank cools off which sounds like your problem. But what caused the temperature to rise could have several causes, NOT just a bad thermostat.
