Legal vs Advisable - going from single to double sink vanity
Author: Fitter29 (FL)

I'm installing a double sink vanity where a single sink once was. There is a single drain line coming through a block wall. Can I install a double wye on it's side to pick up both sink drains? Is it legal or advisable to install a 1-1/2" why on it's side?

a double "Y" is the way to go.
you can not raise the trap higher than the vent. this is the reason the "Y" is laid flat.

I can not see the fitting inside the block wall but I am assuming it's a tee wye in the drain/vent stack with a stub piece coming through the wall. I need two drain lines to pick up my two traps, one from each sink. So with only a single drain line coming through the wall I need to branch both left and right to the center of each sink. That brings me to my original question can I install a double wye on it's side?

can't double trap a single trap arm.

I have seen this done in both bathrooms and kitchen, a double wye where each branch receives a drain and the top is a cleanout.

To me it seems the sinks would siphon off each other but it seems to be legal and done all the time.

To Sum: Thank you! Exactly what I needed for two, 2-sink vanities arriving this week.
