 Snake cable stuck in vent
Author: cmaddox0803 (TX)

Hi, we accidently released a plumbing snake cable down the plumbing vent above our kitchen in an effort to unclog an obstruction. The pipe from the vent runs about 8-10ft before connecting to the kitchen drain pipe. We have a single story, 8yr house on concrete foundation. Cant see the cable but when I lowered a magnet on a fishing line down the vent I can feel the top of the cable about 6ft down. Any help, advice, suggestions is Greatly Appreciated!!! Thank you!

I'd try a treble hook on a sturdy piece of rope.

get a 10' piece of pipe and securely tape a stiff wire to the end that has been bent in a spiral similar to an old style egg beater. when you get it down next to the snake, rotate it so that the wire moves the snake inward toward the pipe and tight into the spiral. keep rotating it slightly as you pull it back out. I have removed many pieces of silverware from commercial floor drains like that.

you need a 'retrieval' head and a power snake assembly

note the counter-clockwise 'wind' of the funnel shaped tip - you will run the snake in extract direction so the retrieval head 'grabs' the lost wire and helps to extract same with proper removal 'spin'

I don't recommend power tools to people that A) get on the roof to snake a drain or cool smiley Drop the aforementioned snake down into the aforementioned drain

How about one like I had years ago. I had to break the floor to access a drain and found a garden hose inside it.
