No hot water from Moen single handle faucet (3570 valve)
Author: GBRguy (NE)

1. Moen single handle shower faucet (Moen T-170 faucet, Moen 3570 rough-in valve ?)
2. 19 year old plumbing

Plenty of hot water everywhere else in the house but turning the shower faucet to full Hot turns the water flow completely off.

I've pulled off the faucet handle and the cover to expose the valve.

From pictures I have found, it looks to me like a Moen 3570 rough-in valve. The faucet is Moen T-170.

The valve looks like this:

1. For lack of a better term, there is a round brass section (port?) on each side of the valve.

2. Both of the round sections have a hex shaped piece threaded into the front of them. The hex shaped parts measure about 3/4 inch across.

3. Each of the threaded hex shaped parts has a small screw coming out the front of it.

4. On the right side ONLY of the valve is another round brass section that is capped off with a large round brass piece that has a slotted head that looks like it was meant to be turned with a very large straight screwdriver. It measures about 1 inch in diameter.

I will try to post a photo if I can.

Plenty of cold water comes out but once you turn the handle towards the hot side, the fliw gradually reduces until it finally shuts off when you reach max hot.

Any advice for now?

Thanks.

You have a Moentrol valve and the pressure balancing unit, which is part of that large hexagon nut is stuck. Purchase a new one and replace it.

You might consider calling Moen for a Free Moen Cartridge for that unit.

Thanks guys. I replaced the cartridge as you suggested and all is well. Read lots of horror stories about removing the old cartridge but this one was easy to get out so the whole job took just minutes. Thanks again.

Well, given what you said in the original posting, and if your description of the valve is accurate, changing the "cartridge", which is the center piece, should have done nothing to cure the problem.
