so like title says, when my washer drains and backs up into the tub 4ft a way. My washer and tub are same room. Split level house and these are located on bottom level.
I can't figure out why, but I have an idea.
I do have a few trees located next to the main sewer drain. And/or my main sewer drain is level or higher then the drains located on the bottom level. Those are the only things I can think would cause this problem.
Anyone have any other ideas or can confirm these might be the problems

whatever the problem is, the first thing to do is properly snake the offending drain.
it might be as simple as a partial stoppage.

it doesn't matter HOW they connect into one pipe. it is that one pipe that has the partial stoppage.
you can snake thru the washer drain to get the stoppage. do run water in the tub while the snake is spinning.

As I told a customer this morning, "tree roots" would SELDOM cause a problem with a sink, tub, or washer drain. You have simple clogged drain line that needs a plumber with a snake.

You would probably NOT see anything inside the wall because they usually join under the floor.

You have a snake that will go around the "P" trap, or are you assuming they have an accessible cleanout somewhere?

if they don't have an accessable cleanout in the washer drain line, they should put one in.
