 Delayed Water Hammer
Author: rmuss (CA)

Whenever I flush one particular toilet in my house, about 5 or 6 hours later a huge water-hammer occurs. It happens only once and only after this toilet is flushed.

It started happening after a plumber changed my house's main water inlet valve.
I tried reducing the water pressure to about 50psi but the problem didn't go away.

Any ideas?

Anything after a minute wouldn't be water hammer from the same source. Perhaps an ice maker is kicking on and doesn't have an arrestor close by?

There is NO WAY, a toilet fill valve could cause water hammer even ONE hour after flushing, much less five or six. You are misdiagnosing the problem and , unfortunately, a plumber could not wait around six hours to hear it happen.

What else besides water-hammer could it be? When it happens, it wakes everyone in the house up. The noise it makes is actually scary.

No way to be certain, but it could be a defective toilet fill valve and a leaking flapper in the bottom of the tank.
