 Oatey Gas Leak Detector Corrosion?
Author: mwr (IN)

I used Oatey brand, gas leak detector on a gas valve in a heater. I assume the valve was stainless steel.

Will this damage/corrode the valve?

I dabbed the joint when I was done with a paper towel but I wonder if getting it wet was a bad idea?

the problem comes when someone uses dish detergent. it the chlorine that causes corrosion to stainless steel.
gas detecting solution should be 100% OK.

Are you still having problems with gas leaks?

Thanks for asking Paul. Long story short, no leak found using the solution.

I was checking the 1/2" iron to gas valve joint. I got a little liberal with the solution and I soaped the test/vent port where you would do pressure testing as well. After doing so I realized that maybe I shouldn't have put moisture on the valve itself.

Do you think it was a bad idea to bring that solution in contact with the valve? (again I think stainless and probably a flare). This is a big Honeywell gas valve that you would find on a natl gas furnace.

moisture will not hurt it..
i have seen them submerged (then dried out)in a flooded basement and not have a problem.

I don't think its a problem, but you've spent wayyyyy to much time checking for gas leaks.Generally, it's a job that takes minutes. Beyond that, install some detectors.
