Tankless water heater. Shuts off unexpectedly. Water turns cold. Comes back on after letting rest for 30 seconds. ONLY happens when it's cold outside. Under freezing for days in a row. Asked multiple plumbers nobody has any ideas. Any thoughts?

My first guess would be an undersized gas line. Another appliance (like the furnace) is running and you are getting shorted on gas. What brand and model of heater? I assume it is on gas, am I correct?

Then you need better plumbers who can watch when it happens and diagnose it.

That makes sense. Thank you. Nobody has mentioned that thought. I wonder if we could test that theory by turning off the furnace when we take a shower.

Or get a licensed plumber to inspect the fuel system for sizing and proper connections. If someone undersized the piping, they probably took shortcuts elsewhere too.

Most tankless water heaters will have an error code come up when they go out. If the plumber doesn't know what error code came up because the home owner reset the heater it is very hard to fix the problem. If we knew the make model and the error code we could help but with out these we are all guessing

Curious to know if you ever found an answer, how you remedied the problem, and how much it cost?
I have the same problem. The unit is not old (2012) and I have flushed it each year I have owned the house (2). Had someone come out and they could not figure it out either. No error code comes up on unit...brand Rinnai.
The amount of gas available could be something...
