Can I change from wall hung to rear outlet toilet?
Author: JRW (MN)

I'm remodeling a 1965 house, and would like to change out a wall hung carrier from a basement toilet to a rear outlet toilet that sits at ADA height.

Is there a way to do this without busting out the concrete?

What are the tools and plumbing connections I will need?

Thanks for any help!

you will either have a vertical or horizontal carrier. if the carrier is horizontal you simply remove the carrier and re-plumb the waste line to the appropriate height for the flange on the back outlet toilet. if the original installer used a 90 degree fitting at the floor and vented the toilet off of the carrier you will need to change the 90 to a tee fitting. this will allow for you to bushing down the top outlet on the tee to the existing vent size and reattach. if the carrier is vertical, the connection point is usually a few inches below concrete. if the original installer sealed the area with concrete you will have to remove it to get to the connection. after that attach new piping to extend upward, add your tee, then bushing and reattach vent. make sure your center outlet on the tee for the flange is at the exact height for your brand of back outlet toilet or it will surely leak. add blocking around the toilet flange between the studs to make it as rigid as possible. hope this helps.

The opening has to be a specific height above the floor for a back outlet toilet to fit, and the wall hung is NOT likely to be at that height. I believe Gerber makes and ADA height wall hung toilet. If you want to get into a "project" and if your carrier has a removable/adjustable face plate, you may be able to raise it to the height you want.
