I have a small expansion tank on my water heater (closed system, check valve at main). How do I know if its properly working?

Turn on a faucet past the check valve to relieve any pressure buildup then check the water pressure, then the pressure tank with an air gauge like a tire gauge. It should be 5-7 psi higher than the gauge pressure of the house pressure. If it isn't, shut off the water and remove the tank with a wrench on the hex threads, don't grab the tank and twist. Check the pressure again. If the tank itself holds pressure, then it simply needs to be recharged. If it doesn't hold pressure, or is sloshing around, your tank is bad and needs replaced. I take mine to a local tire shop and they pump it up for me without a problem.

Honestly, if there isn't a problem I don't. It would be a good idea to check the tank once a year when you drain your water heaters, but I don't think about the expansion tank really. I just flush my hot water tanks twice a year.
