 Emergency Shower Tempering Systems
Author: tbonebanjo (MD)

Has anyone any experience using gas fired instantaneous water heater with ASSE1071 mixing valve serving combination Emergency Shower/Eye-face wash? I need tepid water between 60 and 90 degrees F final temperature at 23 gpm. It seems most of the tempering valves I have seen require fairly high (120-140 degree F) hot-side temperatures to operate properly. It seems rediculous to heat water that much just to temper it back to 80 degrees, however I do not have room for a 120 gallon storage tank. All I seem to come across for this application is electric (I cannot do 180 kw) and steam (not available this project). Any info would be helpful.
Thanks,
Carl in Maryland

That's a lot of GPM so you would have to gang 4-5 tankless units together. No need to use a tempering valve with the tankless, you just program in your target temperature and they deliver.

on situations like this I always advise the customer to contact the water heater manufacturer engineering department and have them tell you what they recommend.

For those temperatures, you are normally not going to need a lot of hot water, since that is close to the cold water temperture during most of the year.

A 100 gallon tank of ANY shape including a serpentine loop of 3-4" pipe installed against a wall in the conditioned space ( 75 degrees ?) and fed only by cold water allowed to reach ambient room temperature and 'sit ready' is my choice.

In the event of emergency you will have 100 gal at ambient followed by decreasing to cold water supply temperature.

! With nothing to fail or require maintenance ! (except the rope on the valve)

See what the safety officer thinks !
