Had a plumber jackhammer out my shower drain and put in a new p trap and drain. Why would they fill the trap with gravel? The new drain grill is 1/2 inch higher than the existing tile. Seems like it should be lower so that water will not stand in the bottom of the shower. Is there something new I have not heard of?

Did the plumber just replace the trap, or did he do all the work?

The trap should not have gravel in it.
The drain cover should not be higher than the tile.

Are we sure he does not mean the gravel is around the trap, and the plumber may have assumed, or been told, that the tile would be raised. After all, why would they replace just the floor drain and not the "safe pan" which would have been destroyed when the floor was opened up?

Something doesn't sound right with this story. No plumber replaces a drain and fills it full of gravel. It is usually the tile guy that does all of that work anyhow.

That is why I assume he means the plumber filled the HOLE with gravel, not the "P" trap itself.
