What makes the seal on a PVC trap adapter? No washer or anything like a slip nut obviously.

I am not sure what kind you are using, but the "normal" one DOES have a washer and slip nut.

female piece is a washer and a nut in one piece then?

yes, the washer is integral with the nut..

Yes, but not ALL of them are like that. THere are just as many, if not more, with a separate washer and nut.

Look closely at the nut. At the point where the nut contacts the trap tube, you'll see a 'built in' gasket.

I also see some that are with the tubular stuff at the hardware store and then the schedule 40 stuff. I assume no difference?

NAH, no difference - just throw in whatever they have in stock.

As per common sense: use the stuff that 'feels' heavier, it most likely is actually better.
IMO: get the type with the separate washer
