I need to replace a leaking stop and waste valve tonight. It is in the basement, shuts off the outside line.
Should I get a compression stop and waste valve or a compresssion ball valve with a drain port?
thank you for any advice.

i'd use a ball valve with a drain button. remove the button and lather up the threads with grease so it will unscrew easier in the future.

Thank you, I took your advice and installed the ball valve with drain last Sat.
Went to Murrays supply medford to get the valve because I thought it would be a better product than home depot (HD steam valves do not last one winter). Asked the man at the counter which end was the meter end of the valve. He said he could not say because it was 'the code'. I said I can go online and watch videos of what to do but you cannot answer me due to a code? He said that is what they have plumbers for, it was 'the code'. Well, it was also easy, move the handle to see the shut off side and that is the meter side.
I am female, 60yrs, first time replacing a valve and I think it took me 25 minutes. If I had a sharper hack saw blade it would have taken less.
Farewell Murrays and thank you packy, all of which I followed.
