Replacing shower drain in a mobile home
Author: BlueSquirrel (MO)

I live in a mobile home made in 1995. I just found that my shower drain is leaking so I have already started the process of replacing it. It uses a 1 1/2" drain, so what I found to replace it with is a "bar sink" strainer drain. It is almost completely identical to the one I removed. My question is this: can I use silicone caulking to bond the new drain to the fiberglass shower floor, or do I need to use plumber's putty to mount it? Thanks for any help.

For you, silicon would be the best choice.

Silicone is fine to help keep buildup from around the edge of the drain, but your water seal will be on the underside of the drain between the shower and the drain assembly. Make sure that the surfaces are clean and any debris removed before attempting to hook up the new drain.

FYI shower drains are supposed to be 2 inch and tub showers 1.5 inch drain waste pipe
