 Main drain splashing up
Author: lindendrtagon (NE)

I have a floor grain in basement that the will gurgle and splash out occasionally, when the washer is draining and toilet is flushed the same time. I had the drain snaked out 147 ft and it still did it. They put a camera in and saw some roots at 147 ft. Would this cause the drain to splash up? They said because of the angles in the pipe they couldn't hydrojet it clean. Because of the distance they said they were afraid the snake would get stuck in roots. They suggested putting a cleanout outside of the house so they could hydrojet it. Is this necessary? $1800 to put in cleanout. It is not backing up but I am afraid it might. Thanks

clean-out necessary = YES

good practice / many places code = every 50 feet

will it stop up completely due to roots if present now = YES

Thanks for your response. My only concern is with the roots so far out would that be the cause of the splashing up occasionally. I know they need to be removed, but could something else cause the splashing up? To go through putting in cleanout and problem still persist. Thanks!

The roots are causing a blockage to your waste water flow from the house but it evidently is a partial blockage or you would have more than 'splashing' from the drain. You probably have a deeply submerged sewer pipe and to access it outside does become costly. If you do not replace the entire sewer line, then the outside cleanout will be needed now and in the future.

If your sewer was particularly deep, or had structures built on top of it and you needed to replace it, I would check into pipe bursting. With bursting, they pull a new line through the old line, splitting it open like a hot dog bun and replacing it with a solid High density poly urethane pipe. All joints are fused into a single piece of pipe, and the only connections are at the two ends.

how do you split open a pipe that is 4 feet below grade? it would take franco columbu to flex his bicept inside the pipe to break it.

you use a hydraulic ratcheting puller, a braided steel cable, and a splitting head that is fused to the pipe. I can get you information if you really wanted it.
