 toilet on an uneven floor
Author: ljb (WA)

When we added a basement bathroomm the tile floor was uneven. When we installed the toilet, it rocked. The tile installer said to use two wax rings; my husband thought this was crazy & refused to do it. There is quite a gap & he ended up using a black rubber gasket to keep the toilet from rocking. It looks unsightly & no amount of caulk will cover it.
My question, can we use 2 wax rings to set the toilet & will that help.
Thank you for your reply.

dry set the bowl

pencil around the base

at 4 points use 1/2" wide by 3" long stacked cardboard shims to level bowl

remove bowl LEAVING SHIMS ON TILE

place wax ring and bolts into position

mix some plaster of paris and trowel it inside the pencil mark high enough to squish when bowl is set

set bowl ONCE squishing down to compress wax ring and plaster

wipe excess plaster for neatness

after 30 minutes when plaster has 'set' pull out shims and plaster their 'gaps'

VOILA ~ perfect, rock solid, and serviceable ~ this is what we actually did in the olden times when plumbing was an actual skilled trade and fixtures were designed to last forever

Using 2 wax seals will not help. I use plastic shims designed especially for toile bowls. Set the toilet without a seal, shim where needed to make the bowl set solidly, then lift the bowl and add the wax seal. Trim the shims flush with the bowl. I like to use the grout matching caulk to fill any gaps.
