Old Busted Cast Iron Drain Cover
Author: AmatinMI (MI)

So, we recently had a blockage in our basement floor drains. We managed to finally clear the blockage with much effort. As part of the effort to clear the blockage, I tried to remove the cast iron drain cover by lightly tapping around the edges with a hammer (trying to loosen it up) and instead it broke in half. The house was built in the 50's and I'm going to assume it is the original drain cover. The two screws, on either edge of the cover, look like they might as well have been flat on the heads and driven into place by a hammer for all I can tell. There are no ruts for a screw driver to go there. The drain cover's dimensions are 4-3/4" in diameter, 1/4" thick and 4-3/8" screw mount diameter. So, I'm trying to find a replacement cover and was hoping someone could recommend one that preferrably doesn't involve too much work if any. I'm pretty handy at computers, but sadly not at plumbing.

Any assistance would be much appreciated!

How about a picture? Your description does not describe any common residential cleanout cover. If it is a perforated drain cover, then good luck finding a 'generic' replacement for it.

It looks a bit like this [www.grainger.com], except it has a screw hole on either side of it and a few of the slits have filled in with something blocking the slit holes.

I'll have to go measure it, but I think this "might" be an ok replacement (assuming it can bear weight):

the 'snap in' one can bear light loads (ordinary foot traffic) but will bend/deform upon heavy use (pool table, Ping-Pong, etc.)

if the cast iron one w/o screw holes fits and lays in place - that would be my choice

In order to replace it with another cast iron one, I'd need to cut the two screws out. Any idea how I would do that?
Thanks!
