 Dishwasher Smells awful
Author: Sgcschultz (IL)

We currently rent our home and have had a few plumbing issues already, but the most recent is that when we run the dishwasher it smells awful! The sink stinks, the bathroom stinks...it's just gross! It's an older house and does not have a vent or a clean out. I haven't the slightest idea what it could be, any thoughts?

Put ice in your disposal. I know it might sound funny but a lot of the smell can be from food waste in the disposal vents. I've will clear the debris and the smell will go away

I haven't mentioned the smell to the landlord because I feel the past two times the plumber came out they felt offended since they did their own "remodeling" on the house including plumbing. this house could even still have orange-burg plumbing, it's that old.

Generally if a drain stinks, it is due to buildup that is full of bacteria and gunk. If you aren't on a septic, try running bleach in the dishwasher, use ice and comet powder in the disposal, but run it for a few seconds, add more ice and comet and don't use the water for about 20 seconds after you turn it back on. Then turn on the cold water and let it all run till the ice is gone. bleach water works wonders if you can get enough down the drain at once to fill the pipes temporarily on sinks. If the odors don't subside, it is possible that the plumbing is put together wrong and you are getting sewer gas back. Don't ever worry about any landlord's feelings when it comes to your residence; your safety and welfare and that of your family come first, not someone's ego. Maybe whoever remodeled the place knew what they were doing, maybe they didn't
