Ok, so our shower valve ended up being slightly too far back. I can get the trim piece to screw on fine. its a single handle ceramic cartridge that turns the water on/off hot/cold.
so when we put the cover plate on the trim it then doesn't fit. what can I do?

Now you know why we do NOT install the valves so they look like the display board. Hopefully, the company makes a stem extension to give you the room you need.

You can also unscrew the shower valve and break any of the straps pull the shower valve forward and put a shim of some sort behind it sometimes it works sometimes not depends on how the water lines were ran to the valve

A "deeper escutcheon" would only make the situation worse. They need a stem extension so the handle will go on, and longer screws to attach the escutcheon they have.
