Removing Cast Iron Waste Pipe from Basement
Author: Lee (NJ)

Gentlemen:

I am planning on removing cast iron waste pipe from cellar. Presently cast iron waste pipe is hanging form joists in cellar.

I asked the Building Inspector he said to use Schedule 40 PVC for Waste Pipe.

Is there Schedule 40 PVC available that has a bell on one end so that I may push pipe into the bell? Or do I just use a PVC Coupler between two schedule 40 pipes to join them together?

The Building Inspector also said that a No Hub Coupling should be used when connecting the PVC to the cast iron City Sewer that goes to the road.

My basement is lower than the city sewer. Should I install a backwater valve? If Yes where does the backwater valve get installed?

Inspector also said a Clean Out is needed as Waste Pipe exits house. Clean Out can be in house or outside.

The waste pipe that is presently hanging in cellar will exit house and meet up with PVC schedule 40 waste pipe.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Somewhat confused............I get that the pipe now hangs from the floor joists. what do you propose doing with it?

Paul48:

Thanks for your reply.

I want to remove that monstrosity of a waste pipe out of my cellar. I want to put that pipe in the soil outside of the house.

I have been able to find out that I should be using ABS schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe. If I am wrong please correct me.

Do they make waste pipe that has a bell or a larger end so that I may just push one male end into female part of pipe?

Should I be using a No Hub Coupling to connect PVC to cast iron city sewer? I went to Loews and it seems that the No Hub Coupling is not as good as a plain rubber coupling(which is much wider)? Seems that the plain rubber coupling would be easier to use.

Should I use a Back Water valve? Where does Back Water Valve get installed?

Thank you

UMMMM..OK....That waste pipe is hung from the joists because it needs that height to exit the home and have enough pitch to the city sewer. How do you propose getting around that?

The basement is below grade. I expect to use the same pitch outside the house as exists inside the house. As long as I go 1/4" per foot I will be fine.

Thank you.

If the basement is below grade and your sewer exits the foundation overhead, then adding a backwater device won't do you any good; it will just collect toilet paper and clog your line. You would be better served in having an outside yard cleanout to access the line. If the city sewer was backing up and your cleanout just had a cap pushed onto it, it would pop off and prevent your house from filling up the tub and toilets with sewage. Not that I condone dumping raw sewage into the street, but I would rather have it in the front yard than the house..

I have seen full lengths of PVC with the larger "female" receptacle built into one end but not sure what it's called or how to specifically get it.

We ended up with a length of it in 2" by accident and just cut the larger end off.

What is preferred for a waste pipe Schedule 40 ABS or PVC schedule 40?

I prefer pvc for faster installations, uv resistance, and rigidity. If your local code inspector told you to use ssh 40 pvc, then don't use abs. quote " I asked the Building Inspector he said to use Schedule 40 PVC for Waste Pipe. "
