tape on supply line - remove?
Author: mwr (IN)

I notice on dishwasher supply valve the original installers used Teflon tape on the joint between the stainless supply line and stop valve.

I know that's not needed. It doesn't appear to be leaking but should I remove the tape and remake the joint just in case?

And related: is tape needed at the connection under the dishwasher with the supply line?

On a 1/2 FIP inlet stop valve... do I use pipe dope or tape on the connection to a copper male adapter?

Yes, on the connection to the pipe, IF it is a thread and not a compression connection. It is not needed on the flexible line, but does not create a problem if it is used.

So either one or the other === dope or tape or both? On the male adapter? Is it standard to use tape on a stop valve?

SHort answer, I NEVER use tape on anything but PVC threads.

Great, thank you. On the supply line to new valve I didn't use any material. On the house supply to the valve I buttered it up with some rectorseal instead of tape. In order to have it orientated correctly, I could only go 1.5 times past handtight. Is that sufficient torque? (note this is on the joint between a 1/2" male adapter and the inlet of the stop valve.)

If it is tight and not leaking, it should be fine. Some people's 'hand tight' is much tighter than others.

IF it doesn't leak, then you used enough torque. Tightness does not depend on some formula about how many turns past "hand tight", whatever that is.
