CLEAR WATER BACK UP WITH A CLOGGED DRAIN
Author: vietvu91502 (CA)

WHY IS IT THAT VERY CLEAN WATER GOES BACK UP TO MY TOILET RIM AND THE BATHTUB HAS A GURGLE SOUND AT THE SAME TIME. BUT AFTERWARDS, THE CLEAN WATER GOES DOWN AND EVERYTHING RETURNS TO NORMAL WITHOUT A CLOGGED DRAIN. IT HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES ALREADY WITH ABOUT 1-2 MONTHS APART AND BOTH OF MY DUPLEX UNIT HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS AT THE SAME TIME. AS I UNDERSTAND, IF THE MAIN DRAIN IS CLOGGED THEN THE BACK UP WATER WILL BE DIRTY. IN THIS CASE, THE WATER IS VERY, VERY CLEAR AND CLEAN. ANY IDEAS AS TO WHY THIS HAPPENS?

The water coming down the line looks clean, possibly shower water, or 'clean' water in the trap and tank of the toilet. The main line needs to be cabled out. Most commonly, roots get into the system, and toilet tissue collects and makes a blockage that sometimes will push through with enough hydrostatic pressure from the water in the drain. Eventually it won't and your duplex will likely flood. Having the drain cleaned is cheaper than water damage and cleaning and sanitizing the area after a sewage backup.
