Hello All. I have a general contractor remodelling my basement.During the bathroom demo, the cement was cut around the bathtub drain. The plumber did the rough work then installed the tub without filling in the approximately 1'x1'hole around the drain. When I asked if the hole should have been refilled with cement, the contractor told me no, having the tub over the open hole is normal. Is that correct or should the hole have been filled with cement or something else? Thank you.

Don't fill with concrete; someone, sometime will need access to the drain. Have the GC seal it over with something that can be easily/readily removed.

It is done either way, and a third option is to put a skim cap over it. Tn a basement it does not matter which way it is doen.

A piece of plastic and then sand is what I usually do.
The plastic is to help keep the radon from escaping.

Excellent point, I didn't think of radon which we have a minor issue with.

It is in our code to recement it. It is called rodent proofing, but will also keep out radon and ground water .
