 Chain Snapper Question
Author: BigReg1500 (CT)

Will a chain snapper cut/snap the steel on a concrete-filled building support or 'lally' column?

I need to replace a couple of these due to rotten bottoms and the cut needs to be precise. I know the standard method is to snap the steel then whack out the concrete flush but I'm not sure what to snap the steel with.

We always used a pipe cutter. Cut through the pipe and gave it a whack with a hammer.

I'm not sure if my local rental center will have a 4"+ pipe cutter vs a snapper, but I'll check. If I'm stuck with only a chain, would it work, or will I wreck it?

Unless it is case iron it will not cut it and you will wreck the cutter.

They should have a pipe cutter big enough. My father had 2 for the bigger pipes.

My largest one is for 4" pipe, but in this case, there may be reinforcing rebar inside the concrete also.

A concrete saw with a diamond blade would do the trick nicely too I would think. I would just put up plastic and keep water on the cut.
