The top of my plastic sump pump basin does not sit flush with the basement floor.
Is there any reason someone would have installed this like this besides laziness?
I am considering cutting it flush with the floor, its about 4" higher than the floor, however, if I do that the cover will no longer have the top lip to fit into.
What should I do in this case?

Is the sump pump in a location that would cause you to trip ?
If not then leave it alone not designed to necessarily be flush with the floor sump pumps are designed to discharge ground water before it elevates to the basement floor level not a drain for water on your basement floor

No its not in a place we would trip but yes my reasoning was that if there was a flooded basement (whether its because of a failed pump or outage) the water would need to get back to the pit once power was restored or a new pump was installed.

If the basement were to flood from sewage, you would be pumping it outside; if it floods from rainwater, you will just kick yourself for not having a battery backup.
