cut black iron with sawz-all, inches away from gas line?
Author: bam99 (SC)

Is it safe to use a reciprocating saw to cut the black iron trap off my rusted water heater? The gas is shut off at a valve about six inches away from the proposed cut. The fittings are rusted beyond hope.

NO NO NO it is not

shut off the gas at the meter FIRST and at the heater

reciprocating saws vibrate a lot - if the piping is REALLY bad you MAY create a leak

open the valves CAREFULLY and use a soap solution to check for leaks (bubble test)

ps. your local jurisdiction may have its own requirements re: gas work
