Black build-up in shower drain and black stains on porcelain
Author: Bvoltero (MA)

Hello,

Every few weeks to a month I need to clean some really nasty black slimy build-up from my shower drain. Also, I have a toilet in my basement that doesn't get much use. I've recently noticed that there is a black ring at the water line and black streaks where the water flows into the toilet. Is this a product of some type of water issue that can be treated (aeration, reverse osmosis, etc) or am I putting my family in danger by continuing to use the water (we don't drink it - ever). When we see anything "black" we think: mold. I am a first-time homeowner and have only been here 5-6 months, so I've not had to deal with these issues myself in the past.

Your knowledge and expertise are appreciated.

Thank you!

Have your water tested. Is this a well or public water supply? Anytime you have a source of moisture that is undisturbed and very little airflow you have the potential for mold to grow. [www.fsec.ucf.edu]
