Gas water heater - aluminum duct
Author: Learning2 (NC)

Had a new 75 gallon gas water heater installed. Guy used 2 4"aluminum (dryer duct) elbows instead of heavier galvanized as I would have expected.

Is this code illegal, just bad practice, or OK?

HIs it dangerous TODAY?

Most new effecient water heaters hardly put off any heat out of the vent. It depends on the Unit. I would feel the elbows while its firing and see if you have heat. Or read the manual and see what it requires for venting. Most new gas heaters can be vented with PVC because of the efficency of the heat transfer theres not much heat leaving the unit...its more for the emissions.

This is a Bradford-White "high input" 75 gallon model MI75S6BN.
It is NOT a high efficency model. The exhaust is hot.

Have the 'guy' come fix his error, then get the job inspected by the local building inspector or the gas company. If he put in dryer vent instead of flue piping, chances are the rest of the venting at least has issues.
