Raising hot water heater off basement floor?
Author: timedecay (IL)

Hello. I just replaced a 25 year water heater by my parents house. The original unit had three steel legs or feet which kept it off of the ground by 3" or so. There have been times were the basement has gotten several inches of rain due to flooding, etc. The previous unit has lasted through all of those incidents because of its raised height. The new water heater does not have any legs to raise it off the ground so it is sitting flat on the floor. I am thinking that we need to raise the water heater off the ground because sooner or later they will get some water in the basement.

Any ideas of what I can use to raise it off the concrete basement floor? Btw, the unit is a Richmond 50 gallon nat gas unit from Menards.

Thanks

I used cinderblock for mine. It is cheap, plentiful, and durable.

Bricks work well also.

Thanks for the responses so far. Do I need to be concerned about codes when raising? I am leaning towards either using a standard house brick or a small concrete cinder block that is 8x4x16". If using the cinder block I would put it on its side to give us close to 4" or so in height which I believe is more than a standard brick.

No code requirements or restrictions. 18" or 24" by 2" thick round concrete stepping stones work also and look nicer. Pile them up for the height you want.
