My bathtub has a RapidFit touch toe type stopper than I'd like to remove. I pulled off the cap, and below there is a black rubber piece with a cylindrical hole down the middle; coming up from the hole is a rectangular (almost square) metal shaft. I don't have enough clearance to get ordinary pliers in that space, and can't get a good grip on the shaft with needle nose pliers.
Does that shaft turn or pull out? How do I do that and what else do I do?

Mine doesn't have a slot for a screwdriver, and the cap is very flimsy plastic that I am guessing is going to snap if I try to use it to unscrew the rod (it's on very tight and won't move at all). The info that it is likely the screwing type is helpful, though; thanks! I will keep at it and try to inch it out with something else ...

you could try using a 12 point socket, something around the 3/8 range perhaps

8-point sockets will fit square shafts. 8-point sockets are available.
