Kohler Pedestal Sink - Issue with Hanger Bolts
Author: bphoward1 (NY)

I'm installing a Kohler Pedestal sink. I inserted the hanger bolts into the wall (through 1/2" drywall and into wood backing). I left the hanger bolts protruding from the wall by 1" as stated in the instructions. In fact, they were sticking out a little more than 1"...probably another 1/8 of an inch. Anyhow, when I rest the sink on the pedestal, the hanger bolts are not coming through the holes in the back of the sink! I'm really miffed because the instructions say 1" should be sticking out. I'm wondering if they provided the wrong hanger bolts. I also checked length of the holes in back of sink by plugging one end with my finger and dropping a 1" nail into the other end. Wouldn't you know, the friggin nail falls onto my finger and does not stick out of the other end. I'm at a loss. Should I just call Kohler and ask them to send me longer hanger bolts? Any other thoughts? Appreciate the time and input.

I would just take a trip to the hardware store and find a hex head wood screw and fender washers if it were me. Leave the existing bolts where they are for alignment of the sink and pedestal, and after it is there, run in your heavy duty hardware for a permanent mounting. I recommend hex head, as it is easier to turn a wrench when tightening than a screwdriver(for the pedestal sinks I have installed anyhow). For a length, you are looking at approximately 2" for the wood behind, .5 inches for the drywall, and the thickness of your sink. Measure your sink and add 2.5-2.75 inches to the length of your anchor and you will be set.

I found 4" hanger bolts at the Orange Box. I brought them home and hacksawed off 1/2". The resulting 3.5" bolts were just right for my application. I'm still miffed that Kohler is providing the wrong length on the bolts that come with the sink basin. I even called them to explain why they are too short, but all they did was send me a new pair of the too-short 3" bolts. They really should provide 3.5"...and their instructions really should indicate that the bolts should protrude 1.5" from the wall...if not, there is no way you would ever be able to thread an end cap nut or any other kind of nut onto the bolts.

All is well that ends well.
